Cate Blanchett has won two Oscars and four Golden Globes in an storied career spanning more than 30 years, now she’s in line for the one award no actor wants.

The annual Razzie Awards, which ‘celebrate’ the very worst of Hollywood for the year, released its nominations on Wednesday with Blanchett in line for a worst actress Razzie for her performance in Borderlands.

Joker sequel Joker: Folie à Deux led the nominations with a total of seven mentions, ahead of Borderlands, Madame Web, Megalopolis and biopic Reagan with six each.

Noted actors joining Blanchett with nominations for worst performance were Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Jack Black, Jerry Seinfeld and Jon Voight, one of President Donald Trump’s newly appointed “ambassadors to Hollywood”. 

Nominees were chosen via emailed ballots to 1202 Razzie members (movie buffs, film critics and journalists) from 49 US states and about two dozen foreign countries. They chose five top contenders in each of nine categories. 

Borderlands, directed by Eli Roth, was almost universally panned by critics and views alike on its release last year. They bemoaned its script, acting and direction.

Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 26 out of 100 based on 36 critics, while audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of “D+” on an A+ to F scale.

Blanchett – who won Academy Awards for her work in Martin Scorcese’s The Aviator and Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, as well as general acclaim for most other roles – surprised fans when it was revealed she would appear in video game adaptation Borderlands.

“I got really absorbed in that whole world. The cosplayers. The YouTube make-up tutorials,” she said.

Sadly, Borderland turned out to be a major disappointment that earned 90 per cent negative reviews on fan review website Rotten Tomatoes and suffered a loss of more than $100 million.

Blanchett will learn her fate when the Razzie “winners” are unveiled by video press release on March 1, the day before the Oscars.
