Brisbane singer Dami Im is looking forward to performing in front of Eurovision fans again. The last time she fronted them was in Stockholm, Sweden, with the song Sound of Silence, which placed second in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016. She had achieved the highest Eurovision Song Contest score ever for Australia.
Now Im is hitting the road for Eurovision on Tour, joining other Eurovision legends performing the songs that have captivated the world on the internationally televised singing competition, which is hugely popular in Australia.
Im is joining the tour in London and Warsaw in the coming days and will bring it back home for a show at The Tivoli, in Brisbane, on November 13, followed by shows at The Palais, Melbourne, and The Enmore, Sydney.
Speaking to her before her departure for London, Im was looking forward to the gigs and being in front of Eurovision fans again.
“The fans are very passionate,” Im says. “They’re the best type of fans for any artist and that’s what I learnt when I performed in front of them. The fans and that community are so into their music and the Eurovision artists.”
Two Australians have been confirmed to perform in the tour. Alongside Korean-Australian singer Im, who’s from Brisbane, the show will feature the youngest 2024 Eurovision entrant at 17 years old, Sydney-sider Silia Kapsis.
According to tour star and spokesperson, Italian-African pop star Senhit, a three-time fan favourite contestant at Eurovision, the idea was first presented in 2019.
“After a worldwide pandemic plus two years of negotiation, Eurodrama Entertainment, SL, could secure the exclusivity and name-using right to organise the first world tour of the Eurovision Song Contest,” Senhit says, adding that Australia is the only country in the world to receive multiple tour stops, despite only joining Eurovision in 2015, proving just how huge the Eurovision fan base is here.
“Eurovision has always been about bringing people together through music, no matter where in the world you are,” Senhit says. “Taking Eurovision On Tour to Australia is incredibly exciting for me because it means sharing this celebration of diversity and creativity with even more fans. Australia has such a passionate Eurovision community and I can’t wait to experience that energy first-hand.”
No less than 18 Eurovision legends will perform the songs that captivated the world on the internationally televised competition, alongside a dedicated fan zone complete with stage props and legendary outfits, including ABBA.
Im says she still feels “very chuffed” to have come second and describes performing in Eurovision as “the most intense thing I have ever done”.
“The energy and the atmosphere are amazing,” she says. “There’s a lot of nerves and excitement and emotions. It’s a bit like the Olympics for non-sporty people.”
Im, who moved to Australia from South Korea at age nine, began her career as a virtuoso pianist and burst into the national consciousness winning the fifth season of TV’s The X Factor Australia. She has released several albums and her Eurovision song, Sound of Silence, charted in 43 countries. She has toured with John Legend and in 2023 collaborated with the formidable jazz virtuoso James Morrison. Jazz is her first love and she has been working on a jazz album recently.
Im has also written a memoir, Dreamer, and lives in Brisbane with her husband and son, who won’t be joining her on her trip to London and Warsaw. That’s tough for her but she’ll be home soon enough for Eurovision on Tour.
“And after this tour I’m going straight into my Christmas tour beginning at Brisbane Powerhouse,” she says. “I love Christmas and now that I have a two-year-old it’s even more special.”
