Sport Australia Hall of Fame member Greg Norman AO has been nominated as an independent director on the Board of the Brisbane Organising Committee for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games (OCOG).
“As a proud Queenslander it is an honour and privilege to help shape the Brisbane Games,” said Norman.
“We will prove our credentials as world leaders in events, sport and hospitality at Brisbane 2032, and create an incredible legacy for this state. I look forward to working alongside the other committee members of OCOG in achieving our goals.”
A two-time British Open Champion and member of the World Golf Hall of Fame Norman is considered to be the most successful golfer in Australian history, and his career on the green started in Brisbane.
“In my youth in the 70s I worked in the golf shop at Royal Queensland and now that course will be the home of golf at Brisbane 2032,” he recalled.
“While I wish I could wind the clock back four decades and compete in 2032 – it is a privilege to help shape the Brisbane Games.”
Norman stepped down as CEO of LIV Golf, the breakaway golf circuit he helped launch, earlier this month handing over day-to-day duties to Scott O’Neil.
The celebrated golfer is the Albanese Government’s pick to replace Member for Moreton Graham Perrett, who has announced his intention to retire from politics.
OCOG president Andrew Liveris said he was absolutely delighted by Norman’s nomination.
“What better Australian sports brand is there than Greg Norman? What better Queensland sports brand than Greg Norman? He will help put our state and our city on the global map over the next seven years.”
The next meeting of the Brisbane OCOG is scheduled for April 5.
