A man who allegedly shot a police officer in the leg before being shot twice and tasered during an arrest has been charged with attempted murder.

Tyson Daniel Athman, 26, faced Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday accused of using a police gun to shoot an officer in the thigh and biting another constable.

Police were called to the inner Brisbane suburb of Annerley on January 10 after reports Athman was in the backyard of a property he did not live at, wielding a piece of wood.

A 40-year-old acting sergeant and junior constable approached Athman in an attempt to de-escalate his agitated state before the 26-year-old allegedly lunged at the senior officer.

Athman allegedly grabbed the acting sergeant’s gun and during the struggle, a shot was fired which hit the officer in the thigh.

During the struggle, Athman also allegedly bit the junior constable.

The junior constable then shot Athman twice in the stomach before providing first aid to his fellow officer.

More officers arrived on the scene and tasered Athman as he remained agitated despite being shot in the stomach.

The two officers and Athman were taken to the hospital.

Both police officers have since been discharged.

Athman was charged on Tuesday with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of trespassing and wilfully assaulting police officer, one count each of serious assault police officer by biting, enter a dwelling and commit, assaults occasioning bodily harm and trespassing on a railway.

Some of the charges relate to further investigations under another police operation of Athman’s movements before he arrived at the Annerley property.

Athman did not appear in court in person as he remains in hospital under police guard.

His lawyer Nick Dore did not apply for bail on behalf of Athman, telling the magistrate his client remains heavily sedated as he recovers from his injuries.

Dore also mentioned that Athman was suffering from mental health issues including psychosis.

The matter was adjourned until January 30 when the prosecution will apply for a disease order test.
