The long road to a plan

The Queensland government has ended a long wait by unveiling the 2032 Olympic venue plan, almost four years after Brisbane was named as host city.

February 22, 2019 – Southeast Queensland Council of Mayors feasibility study says the region could host the Brisbane 2032 Olympics using existing and already planned infrastructure

September 10, 2019 – Queensland officially launches bid campaign, with then Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk part of an Australian delegation that met with International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach in Switzerland

February 24, 2021 – The committee declares Brisbane is the “preferred candidate” for the 2032 Games

April 20, 2021 – Palaszczuk announces the Gabba as the Games centrepiece and a $1 billion redevelopment of the stadium

July 21, 2021 – Brisbane is officially confirmed as 2032 Olympic host city

February 17, 2023 – An Olympic funding agreement is reached with Queensland government and the Commonwealth, with $2.5 billion in federal dollars for a new 18,000-seat indoor arena in Brisbane’s CBD and another billion for new venues and facility upgrades

December 1, 2023 – Queensland government says Brisbane showgrounds to undergo $150 million upgrade so it can host cricket and AFL during Gabba rebuild, much to the surprise of the sports and local council who were asked to assist funding

December 10, 2023 – Premier and Olympic Minister Palaszczuk ends her nine-year Labor reign and resigns, replaced by Steven Miles days later

January 17, 2024 – Former Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk leads a 60-day review into 2032 infrastructure announced by Miles

March 17, 2024 – Miles receives review but ignores key findings including building a Victoria Park main stadium, opting instead to upgrade ageing facilities like the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre

October 26, 2024 – Liberal National Party wins state election with new Premier David Crisafulli vowing to order a 100-day 2032 venue review

November 29, 2024 – The 100-day review is launched with Crisafulli saying no new stadiums would be built

March 25, 2025 – After receiving the review’s findings on March 8, the Queensland government unveils the 2032 venue plan, 1343 days after Brisbane was named host city
