A man and teenager believed to be British tourists have died after drowning at a popular Queensland beach.

Three people were reportedly swept out to sea on Sunday afternoon at Round Hill Head at 1770 in Queensland, sparking a major emergency service response with a CapRescue helicopter deployed.

A 46-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were retrieved from the water but declared deceased, police said.

A third man, a 37-year-old from Monto, was rescued and flown to Bundaberg Hospital for treatment.

“Sunday’s mission was a difficult one,” CapRescue said on its social media.

“Despite the best efforts of all involved, two people tragically lost their lives.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this heartbreaking incident.”

Police said both the deceased were believed to have been from Britain, police said. A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Meanwhile, a search and rescue operation continues in north Queensland after a 62-year-old man failed to resurface after swimming out to help two children on kayaks.
