Responding to Homeless given 24 hours to move on from Brisbane parks

That is so ridiculous. What the council should do is provide Port-a loos, electric barbecues, rubbish bins and some sort of showers. And if there are discarded needles some place to safely dispose of them. It is so stupid to force them out of parks when there is no place for them to go. – David Parr

It’s still not solving the problems with housing this day and age. I have health issues that cannot stand the cold of the Barossa Valley so last year I purchased a caravan and 4×4 and moved to Queensland. First, I tried Golden Beach caravan park (no permanents allowed until someone dies or moves out), then moved onto Hervey Bay, a council caravan park with a four-month maximum stay at $257/week after five weeks. This year the new prices start at $385 plus $20 for every holiday and school holidays, so that’s $525 per week for school holidays. How does one afford that on a single pension which is less than $590 per week? Very concerned citizen of Australia! – Trevor Langmeand

Responding to Australia faces the prospect of a minority government – what will it look like?

I’m inclined to disagree with Michael Keating, who argues that independent candidates should indicate prior to the election which of the major parties they would support to form government. As we have seen before, the hours and days after the formation of a hung parliament are the window in which independent MPs hold the hammer. They can ask for concessions from each of the major parties – perhaps on policy, perhaps on funding for projects in their electorates – and make the choice that best aligns with the interests of the people they represent. Yes, most Australians would probably like the election to be over sooner than later. But MPs are elected to get the best possible outcome for their constituents, not to make life simple or predictable for the rest of us. – Peri Strathearn
