Forget your run-of-the-mill servo pie – a real pie is a thing of beauty. We’re talking flaky pastry, flavour-packed filling and a chewy base – cooked to perfection and then crafted together to create a true feat of comfort food. Whether you’re on the go or chowing down for a family dinner, the humble pie can do it all. We’ve rounded-up Brisbane’s best pies so our pie partisans never look at a Four’N Twenty the same ever again.
Yatala Pies, Yatala: This one’s a classic. Every trip to or from the Gold Coast is made infinitely better by a stop at Yatala Pies. For more than 130 years this pie shop has been cranking out thousands of golden-crusted beauties for us to enjoy and for that we sincerely thank them.
Agnes Bakery, Fortitude Valley: This premier Brisbane bakery and its sweet pastry menu tend to attract a sprawling line out its door – and its savoury offerings are no exception. Whilst the sandwiches, garlic scrolls and focaccia might call to you, don’t overlook the pie. Agnes Bakery does one pie only, but they do it well. The beef and mushroom pie puts a gourmet twist on the Australian classic with a caramelised golden pastry and a slow-cooked filling, the Agnes beef pie is a Brisbane must try.
Banjo’s Bakery, various locations: Iconic Tasmanian bakery chain Banjo’s Bakery Cafe opened its first Brisbane-based full-service cafe, bakery and drive-thru in Darra in March 2020, making a splash with its range of signature pies that’ll blow your socks off. Adventurous eaters can chomp into a chicken parmigiana, double-cheeseburger or scallop pie, or settle for the classic beef pie – there’s no wrong choice here!
Jocelyn’s Provisions, various locations: James Street’s home of sweets also boasts a strong savoury selection, which includes crusty pies fit for one or the whole family. Lamb and rosemary, beef and red wine, chicken and mushroom – flavours you simply can’t resist.
Banneton Bakery, various locations: If you’re known to pop to your local bakery for a fresh loaf every now and then, we suggest stopping in at your closest Banneton Bakery to snag one of its savoury pies while you’re at it. These hearty beauties boast fillings including beef and Guinness and chicken and mushrooms, as well as a delightful Mexican-inspired option that’ll warm up your insides.
Muzza’s Gourmet Pies, Coorparoo: The name Muzza has become synonymous with excellent pastries, and the pies are all the proof you need to certify this spot’s reputation. If variety is a barometer of quality, then wait until you get a load of Muzza’s range! Steak and cheese, mince curry, broccoli, cauliflower and cheese, chicken tandoori, chicken with brie and asparagus, and classic chunky steak are just a few of the pastry parcels on offer.
Rise Bakery, Hamilton: This riverside boulangerie is dedicated to the traditional art of French patisserie and that even extends to its pies. Rise Bakery has swapped the old-school mince-meat filling for its show-stopping beef bourguignon, with melt-in-your-mouth beef bathed in a rich gravy filling – all encased in a golden, flaky pastry and topped with thyme. You can also snag Rise Bakery’s beef pie and chicken, leek and truffle in a large size, making it a delicious dinner for you and friends.
Syd’s Pies, Loganholme: Loganholme is a haven for pies and Syd’s Pies is well worth investigating if you are ever passing through. This dispensary is often entered into The All Australian Meat Pie Competition, so the quality is high. Savoury or sweet, Syd’s got them all.
Beefy’s, various locations: With a name like Beefy’s, you just know that the pies are going to be something special. With locations found in Brisbane all the way up through the Sunshine Coast, there are plenty of stops for anyone on a road trip north. The signature steak pie shares menu space with Thai green curry, chicken and vegetable, and curried steak.
Golden King Bakery, Ashgrove: If you can tear yourself away from Golden King Bakery’s banh mi offering, you’ll notice that its crispy pie selection is stellar as well. The likes of plain chunky steak, tomato with steak, chicken and vegetable, and potato-top pies are available, with a delicious golden pastry crust proving irresistible.
Gisler’s Roadside Pie Cafe, Burbank: Gisler’s Roadside Pie Cafe was one Brisbane’s first pie spots when it opened in 1976, with the Burbank roadside truck standing the test of time thanks to its killer array of pastry parcels. We’re talking flavours such as bacon and cheese, curry steak, steak and pepper, and its enormous loaded pies. In addition to the Burbank original along Mount Gravatt Capalaba Road, Gisler’s has a bakery in Cleveland, plus the pies can be found at The Nook by GSpot Espresso in Thornlands.
The Bakeologists, various locations: As its lab-sounding name would suggest, The Bakeologists approaches pie-making like a science from its masterfully buttery pastry to the rich-flavoured filling. With an always-stocked cabinet of homemade pies and pastries, this bakery is known for its extensive menu of delicious delights. Cult favourites include the black Angus steak and mushroom and the beef bacon and cheese, each completed with buttery pastry.
Ferny Way Bakery, Ferny Hills: Deep on the northside, you’ll find Ferny Way Bakery nestled in Ferny Village. The small family-owned bakery boasts a menu of baked goods made in-house as well as plenty of first-place ribbons from the Queensland Baking Show on its walls. In the pie cabinet, you’ll find shelves of beloved varieties from chunky beef, lamb and rosemary, and bacon, each packed with flavour and home-made flair.
