From Moscow to New York, Sydney Dance Company has received world-wide acclaim for its inimitable approach to contemporary dance. In its latest creation, Twofold, the company celebrates its choreographic dynamism with two evocative works from renowned choreographers, Melanie Lane and Rafael Bonachela.Twofold begins with Rafael’s critically acclaimed piece IMPERMENANCE.

Described as the single best piece created by and for an Australian dance company, IMPERMENANCE will finally make its Brisbane debut. With a score penned by Grammy Award-winning composer Bryce Dessner (The National), the stirring work grapples with the themes of beauty and devastation – inspired by tragedy of the Australian bushfires and the Notre-Dame fire in Paris. Performed live on stage by the Australian String Quartet, Bryce’s score is paired with Rafael’s visceral and thrilling choreography, resulting in a tour de force of Australian dance.

IMPERMENANCE will be followed by the latest work by renowned choreographer Melanie Lane who most recently brought the critically acclaimed WOOF to the stage in 2019. LOVE LOCK contemplates the future of folk dance, celebrating the tradition’s ability to move, warn and empower. With a score composed by UK electronic artist Chris Clark and costumes created by designer Akira Isogawa, LOVE LOCK considers the social mythologies of today, exploring the collective experiences of cultural diversity, an accelerating world and disappearing lands. By fusing futurist motifs with the traditional outlet of folk dance, LOVE LOCK offers a hypnotic performance that continues Melanie’s career-long exploration of physical and cultural histories.

Rafael and Melanie’s creative collaboration will be illuminated by lighting design from Damien Cooper for both works. Twofold comes for Brisbane Powerhouse for a strictly limited run from Thursday October 17 to Saturday October 19.
