Cafe Disco on Hardgrave Road in West End is an eatery and wine bar built with a DIY ethos. The brainchild of Tasfeen Hassan (former co-owner of clothing boutique Contra and its coffee-slinging offshoot Cafe Contra), Cafe Disco is tapping into Tasfeen’s Bangladeshi background, offering a menu inspired by family recipes and Tasfeen’s own experiences of eating and travelling around the world. The seasonally evolving offering is concise, but made with care and intent. During the day you can pop in for stuffed pitas and spiced and slow-cooked tomato and pepper shakshuka. At night, the offering shifts to include the likes of corn bread with smoke salt and chive butter, melon and cucumber rojak, ghee roast-potato chaat, and fish rillette with pickled fennel, shallots and chives served with crisps. Coffee is supplied by Northgate-based Passport Specialty Coffee, while booze includes a wine list comprised of vino from small producers, Range Brewing beers and ice-cold martinis. As for the vibes, Tasfeen will be playing an assortment of disco records accumulated on his travels, including music by artists from Pakistan, Indonesia, India and Malaysia, which will form the bulk of the venue’s playlist.
