In July 2024, the team behind popular New Farm cafe Hey Mr expanded to The City, opening Monday Cafe in the old modern-industrial Motorwagen space on Adelaide Street. Monday Cafe plucks a bunch of Hey Mr’s greatest hits for its own menu, while adding extra items for its lunchtime offering. Stand-out selections include the karaage chicken croffle with sriracha aioli, the haloumi and corn fritters with rocket, avocado, tomato relish, ricotta salata and poached eggs, and nasi goreng topped with a fried egg. Monday Cafe is also serving its own range of house-baked goods, including matcha croissants, sweet and savoury danishes and lemon cakes. On the caffeine front, Monday Cafe has teamed up with Melbourne-based Dukes Coffee Roasters, serving the balanced Dukes Blend and Highwire Blend alongside single-origin filter coffees, tea from Tour de Tea in New Farm, sticky chai, smoothies and juices. Mondays Cafe is also licensed, with a small selection of boozy beverages available for lunchtime visits. Speaking of lunch, from 11:00 am, Monday Cafe’s menu expands to offer a number of pasta dishes and snacks. Serves of spaghetti bolognese with Japanese-style chicken katsu and gnocchi burrata is available alongside crispy eggplant bites with Asian-style caponata, corn ribs coated in Mexican-style spiced sour cream and fetta cheese, and fried Korean-style chicken wings.
