Old-world hospitality made a comeback in 2021 with the early-September opening of Mr. Badger’s – a New York-inspired deli, sandwich shop, pizzeria and bar. Owned and operated by the duo of Dan Rodriguez and Adam Pykett (of Canvas Club and Electric Avenue fame), Mr Badger’s is a singular snack and sip spot that also looks to pay homage to Brisbane’s history. Mr Badger’s draws its namesake from Joseph Stillman Badger, chief electrical engineer and general manager of Brisbane Tramway Co. who helped establish the tram system that often terminated in Woolloongabba. This old-world approach has resulted in a warm decorative aesthetic anchored by a scratch-built replica of a 1900s tram car in the middle of the space, furnished with comfy leather booths to sink into. The rest of the space has been crafted from recycled materials, with a deli cabinet, back bar and loads of memorabilia sourced second-hand. The Mr Badgers menu features a host of European-inspired eats, including brunch bites, deli-style snacks, antipasti, stacked sandwiches and a range of pizzas – including both classic styles and Detroit-style rectangular pizzas. All of this is bolstered by a small selection of beers, wines and bottled cocktails from Canvas and Electric Avenue.
