James Street’s dining scene became even more exciting with the opening of Penelope – a European-inspired bistro, bar, and supper club from the Coats Group (the team behind MAYA Mexican and Il Molo). Penelope offers a 75-seat space designed to be a versatile venue for leisurely lunches, intimate dinners, and late-night hangs. The semi-subterranean location, formerly home to Bar Tano and Bucci, has been transformed into a chic, intimate spot reminiscent of mid-century New York and London supper clubs, blending nostalgic elements with modern design. The menu, led by executive chef Evan White, features classic bistro fare with a playful twist, such as oysters with champagne mignonette, wagyu beef tartare, steak frites au poivre and pasta alla vodka. A late-night menu offers indulgent bites like gildas and devilled eggs, club sandwiches, and three-cheese jaffles. The beverage program includes classic cocktails with a Penelope twist, as well as a wine list that focuses on Italian and French selections. With a stylish interior, private dining options, and a welcoming vibe, Penelope is set to become a new go-to for all-day and all-night dining and drinking.
