In what is a huge score for Brisbane’s dining scene, beloved Melbourne-born pan-Asian restaurant Supernormal opened a sibling site in the heart of The City in 2024. Chef and restaurateur Andrew McConnell’s perpetually pumping Flinders Lane locale is a must-try eatery for those visiting Melbourne, and its Brisbane expansion is living up to the same lofty reputation. Swapping the neon-lit, industrial, Tokyo-inspired aesthetic of Supernormal Melbourne, the Brisbane venue embraces its subtropical home, with Vince Alafaci and Caroline Choker of ACME pairing layered natural tones and textures (think panelled timber, rattan detailing and a Petrie Bight retaining wall) with dappled carpets and vibrant green peppered terrazzo floors to create a warm, organic and inviting space.

Executive chef Jason Barratt is at the helm, working closely with Andrew to craft Supernormal Brisbane’s produce-driven menu, which is divided into appetisers and raw bar bites, entrees and dumplings, main courses, side dishes and desserts. Highlights include scallops roasted in kelp butter, clay-pot sticky pork ribs and ginger and prawn dumplings, while mains like steamed coral trout with brown butter and lime dashi, sour-and-salty crispy lamb with Yuxiang vinegar and coriander seed, and whole Northern Queensland mud crab with Chinese celery are showstoppers.

Supernormal’s beverage list has been carefully crafted to perfectly pair with the bold flavours and textures of the food. Close to 400 bottles grace the wine list, selected for their quality and versatility, and favouring family-owned producers. Our subtropical climate and local produce are also reflected in the cocktail menu, which takes a tiki-style lean alongside retrained interpretations of classics.
