Museums after dark always hold a little bit of magic. This very special Crafty Party at Museum of Brisbane will transform you Cinderella-like into a jewellery designer for a night with a workshop from contemporary maker Mika.
Mika’s eclectic, architectural jewellery graces the shelves of the Museum of Brisbane Shop. Originally a graphic designer, Mika developed her jewellery making skills working with silver. She began designing pieces for her mum but, over time, her mum found heavier jewellery less comfortable to wear and clasps and closures difficult to manoeuvre. Mika started to create using soft non-toxic sponge rubber which is incredibly lightweight, and including magnetic clasps making the pieces easier to put on and take off. These accessibility measures have now become part of her signature style.
The 2.5 hour workshop includes a glass of bubbles from Symphony Hill Wines (or a soft drink) which you can savour as Mika walks you through her design practise. Then try your hand at sketching out your own design before putting theory into practice as you bring your creation to life with guidance from the artist. All sketching and making materials supplied and each participant will take home a one-of-a-kind piece inspired by Mika’s design philosophy.
