Mitchell Fine Art in Fortitude Valley Brisbane is currently hosting the first solo exhibition from Brisbane artist Dylan Sarra. Running until December 13, this new exhibition, Embers of Heritage, invites viewers to explore the deep connection between fire and First Nations culture, as experienced by the artist.

Dylan Sarra was born in the Bundaberg region and belongs to the Gooreng Goreng people. Graduating from the Queensland College of Art in 2022, Dylan focuses on exploring identity and place through a diverse range of disciplines such as print, digital, paintings and sculpture. Dylan has garnered a reputation for his ability to connect with audiences and provoke meaningful dialogue about Indigenous history. His artworks aims to not only leave audiences intrigued by Indigenous culture, but to recognise the role we all play in acknowledging First Nations people.

Dylan’s exploration of fire throughout the exhibition considers its role in shaping identity and community, celebrating the resilience and ingenuity of First Nations people. In this exhibition, viewers are encouraged to reflect on our relationship with fire, heritage and the natural world.

“This exhibition reflects my personal journey and highlights fire as a powerful tool for transformation and renewal,” says Sarra. “Each work captures the knowledge of past generations and highlights the importance of preserving cultural traditions.”

Dylan Sarra is a finalist in this year’s Telstra National Torres Strait Islander Art Awards in Darwin and has been a finalist for the last three consecutive years.

Embers of Heritage is now running at Mitchell Fine Art.
