Nothing says Easter quite like a tray of deliciously fluffy hot cross buns that are still warm from the oven – of course topped off with a generous schmear of butter. Call us eager, but we went on a little hunt of our own to find the best spots to get your hot cross bun fix across the Gold Coast this year.
Paddock Bakery, Miami
Paddock’s iconic woodfired sourdough hot cross buns matched with a thick layer of Pepe Saya cultured butter is the ultimate Easter treat. This year, the team is slinging two mouth-watering flavours – the OG spiced fruit and decadent chocolate. These babies are available in store daily, either on their own, or in packs of six or 12.
5B2F Bakehouse, Chirn Park
On any given weekend, you’ll find a line of eager pastry lovers waiting to indulge in 5B2F’s freshly baked treats and artisan breads. But when hot cross bun season rolls around, the excitement reaches a whole new level. Pastry chef and owner Moonsun Yoo and the talented team are again slinging their famed hot cross buns. The milky, soft bun is infused with cranberries, raisins and apricots – the fruits are all marinated in port wine first to ensure the buns have depth from first bite to the last.
Burleigh Baker, Burleigh Heads and Paradise Point
When it comes to baked goods on the Gold Coast, Burleigh Baker is always a crowd favourite. The team is once again delighting taste buds with its deliciously soft, fruit-filled sourdough hot cross buns, which are handcrafted and fermented for 24 hours to honour the bakery’s gut health policy.
Fuel Bakehouse, Currumbin, Burleigh Heads and Cabarita
All three Fuel locations will baking fresh hot cross buns from the week before Easter and all over Easter weekend. The bakers will be lovingly pumping out two flavours this year – a traditional fruit hot cross bun (which just happen to be vegan, too) as well as a decadent choc-chip variety. Your hot cross buns are in very good hands here, so grab one or a pack to go.
Bam Bam Bakehouse, Mermaid Beach
When it comes to delightfully decadent, handcrafted pastries, Bam Bam is the master. This Easter, the pastry chefs are baking traditional and plain chocolate hot cross buns, as well as traditional hot cross buns piped with swirls of vanilla custard and chocolate hot cross buns lovingly jammed with choc-caramel. Keep your eyes peeled for the large Easter Bomb (coming soon!) filled with Biscoff for a decadent Easter treat to share.
Franquette, Tamborine Mountain
If you find yourself wandering around Tamborine Mountain with a hankering for a hot cross bun, make haste to Franquette, which will be slinging buns the week prior to Easter and over the Easter week. The soft hot cross buns will be freshly baked on site and are expected to come out of the oven at around 8:00 am – be sure to time your visit so you can get them hot and fresh. Franquette will also be baking super fluffy hot cross bun loaves – perfect for pulling apart at home this Easter.
Well Bread & Pastry, Palm Beach and Miami: With outposts in Palmy and Miami, Well Bread & Pastry is making it super convenient to get our fix of artisan buns. In true Well Bread style, the hot cross buns are made in the traditional fashion, all hand shaped using all the best locally, sustainability sourced ingredients. Make no mistake, these bad boys are top-tier treats.
The Bread Social, Currumbin and Tweed Heads
How does a brioche triple-choc hot cross bun with whipped burnt maple butter sound? Pretty darn delish if you ask us. The Bread Social is now slinging its freshly baked traditional and chocolate brioche hot cross buns Currumbin and Tweed Heads from now until Easter – online orders are open too!
