LimLay brings a taste of Thai street food and late-night bites to Burleigh Heads

The culinary evolution of the beachside suburb of Burleigh Heads shows no signs of slowing. In fact, just last week it got even hotter with the addition of LimLay Thai. The show-stopping new 100-seater brings a taste of Thai street food, fanciful cocktails and late-night bites to the much-loved locale. Here’s everything you need to know …

Opening eleven restaurants in ten years, hospitality veterans Pattaree (Pat) Jiranuchaiwattana and Vitchaya (Alex) Hasitawet know what it takes to create a memorable venue. Having previously opened Nahm Talay Thai in Surfers Paradise, Nahm Thai in Coomera, Chong Co Thai at Pacific Fair Shopping Centre, and most recently, Valyn Thai Restaurant & Bar in Isle of Capri, the pair has been instrumental in fuelling our ongoing love affair with Thai cuisine. Their latest, LimLay Thai, could very well be the most impressive yet. Amalgamating two prominent sites along the Gold Coast Highway (formerly occupied by SuzyBBQ and Ghanda), the sizeable new space is the culmination of their experience, from the mesmerising open kitchen that offers passers-by a glimpse at the goods, to the popcorn-textured render and gold flecks adorning the walls.

“If you’re going to do something, do it grand and make it beautiful,” owner Pat says. And that’s precisely what they’ve done with LimLay.

It’s not just the aesthetic of LimLay that will leave a lasting impression. Although inspired by street food, the eatery brings together traditional flavours from all over Thailand alongside modern, high-end plating techniques to create a thoroughly unique and delicious dining experience. Depending on the time of day and your culinary preference, there are a few different menus on offer. The Thai menu caters to very traditional Thai tastes, ranging from barbecue pork jowl to brown soup noodles and Thai-style seafood salads. The regular dine-in menu offers unique signatures such as Miang Kham betel-leaf wraps, fresh oysters and Asian-style salmon ceviche alongside beloved classics like tom yum soup, slow-cooked beef cheek massaman curry, hot pots and pad Thai. The premium ingredients are worthy of a mention, including MB9+ wagyu and Hokkaido scallops, with plenty of innovative and theatrical plating to add a little drama to each dish.

Then, there’s the supper menu. By day and into the early evening, LimLay is envisaged as a beautiful family-friendly Thai eatery inspired by the flavoursome fare you would find sizzling away on a barbecue in the streets of Thailand. As the night rolls on, the music gets a little louder as the DJs take the reins and the food menu transitions to smaller bites such as chicken wings and beef skewers. The drinks get a little stronger and more elaborate, too, case in point the Wonder Wheel, which is 12 shots of vodka and lemonade that arrives at your table in a Ferris wheel. While often the drinks can be an afterthought, at LimLay they are quite the opposite and rival the theatrics of the food with bubbles, crystal toppers, fairy-floss and jelly fish shots among the selection.

Those in search of a bite on the run will appreciate LimLay’s dedicated Grab & Go menu, that features the likes of crisp calamari, chicken satay and shiitake and taro spring rolls alongside a couple of innovative drinks such as a Thai milk tea slushie and a whole fresh coconut.
