A lot is happening on the Gold Coast (and surrounds) these days, it’s almost too much to keep up with. The Dish is a rapid-fire rundown of the coast’s food news – quick taster-sized tidbits to keep you in the know and, perhaps, tickle your taste buds. This week we’ve got word of a quacking new collab as well as a drool-inducing new burger slinger that’s set to open oh-so-soon …
The Ducks at Hotel Brunswick
If you’re planning a road trip over the border this summer, make sure you plot a visit to Brunswick Heads. Why? Well, the team behind legendary cafe crew Three Blue Ducks will be taking up residence at Hotel Brunswick, with chefs Darren Robertson and Andy Allen teaming up with Hotel Brunswick’s head chef Loki Lynch on a new Cali-inspired menu. The crew will be applying its ethos – which champions sustainability and ethically sourced produce – to the offering, drawing upon a bounty of Northern Rivers ingredients and putting a Three Blue Ducks twist on traditional pub dishes. Think chicken schnitties and parmies, Australian bay-lobster rolls, Travla beer-battered fish and chips, chilli chicken wings, pizzas and flatbreads, ceviche, prawn toast with nam jim, and old-school prawns with Marie Rose sauce.
Hotel Brunswick’s drinks menu is also getting an upgrade, unveiling a bolstered wine list showcasing Australian winemakers and regions, and a cocktail menu that features three styles of margarita alongside other classics such as a mojito, lychee martini, amaretto sour and Japanese slipper. Hotel Brunswick guests will be able to enjoy the fruits of this killer collab from December.
Slurp Pistachio Papi frappes at Burleigh’s Piada Co
Since opening earlier this year, Piada Co has well and truly found their following. As we roll into summer, the team has gifted us some tasty new treats to tickle the taste buds, including a Pistachio Papi frappe. Now, if you’ve had the pleasure of experiencing a frappe here, you know you’re in for a treat. This nutty new riff dollops in a big scoop of the slightly-salty-slightly-sweet spread with a swirl of the venue’s own soft-serve ice-cream before hitting the canning machine – just be sure to give it a big shake before you crack the tin. Joining the new frappe flavour bomb is a salami piadina, which is made with the venue’s own ‘nduja cream, as well as sips of Aperol and Peroni buckets – hellooooo Italian summer. You know where to find us.
OH-EM-GEE – Melbourne’s YOMG to open at Pacific Fair Shopping Centre
Melbourne’s much-loved burger and self-serve frozen-yogurt destination, Yo My Goodness, has announced a second outpost right here on the Gold Coast. Yo My Goodness (pronounced ‘yo-em-gee’), is set to open the doors to a sizeable new space at Pacific Fair Shopping Centre that will deliver the complete YOMG experience – think burgers and sides to shakes, artisanal frozen yogurt, and acai complemented with a full, self-serve toppings bar. The new store will be one of the brand’s largest venues so far and is set to open in December with the construction already well underway.
The Gold Coast is set to score a $1.5-million indoor golf entertainment precinct
In news that is guaranteed to have every golf enthusiast giddy with excitement, two ex-army mates are switching bomb suits for birdies as they prepare to open a seriously impressive indoor golf entertainment precinct in Ashmore. At 600-sqm, the enormous X-Golf will include state-of-the-art simulators that are renowned as the world’s most realistic with high-resolution cameras, infrared lasers and impact sensors to capture detailed data about each shot. Players can also tackle 50 of the world’s most prestigious courses. It isn’t just golf, there will also be darts, a pool table, live sporting action playing on the big screens, a central bar stocked with tap beer and cocktails, and a full kitchen – basically everything you need for your home away from home. Franchise owner Mitch was looking for a transition back into civilian life after being medically discharged from his role as an ammunition technician. “Opening my first ever franchise business is certainly nerve-wracking, but when I compare it to what we were doing in the Army, it’s easy!” Mitch will launch the exciting new sports entertainment hotspot on Tuesday November 26 alongside his friend and fellow ex-army buddy Alex. “There’s a solid golf scene here and to combine that with welcoming hospitality, good food and drinks, and a lively atmosphere will be a real game changer for the sport,” Alex says. Located at 345 Southport Nerang Road, X-Golf Ashmore will open in coming weeks. Bookings can be made here.
Crust Pizza drops piadina-esque sandwiches to curb your craving
When those pesky pangs of hunger hit hard, sometimes you need something quick and delicious, stat. Crust Pizza is taking a concerted crack at the lunchtime trade with the introduction of its piadina sandwiches, inspired by traditional Italian street food. Crust’s version is part pizza, part sandwich, and uses its signature pizza dough to envelop the tasty fillings such as prosciutto, mortadella, bocconcini, cucumber, pickled red onion, mixed leaves and truffle aioli (that’s the Crust Deli). Or, for a Mediterranean moment, try to garlic lamb and feta or Sicilian chicken.
