End of an era – Broadbeach’s Miss Moneypenny’s and Fat Freddy’s make way for The Beach Hotel and Cora

While it’s never easy to say goodbye to long-standing venues, especially ones that are as loved as Miss Moneypenny’s and Fat Freddy’s, the promise of something equally as delicious waiting in the wings eases the sting somewhat. Last week, Moreton Hospitality unveiled the first of two new concepts that will take over the Surf Parade site. Say hello to The Beach Hotel Broadbeach and the soon-to-open Cora.

Ushering in a delicious new chapter, The Beach Hotel Broadbeach officially opened its doors on November 29, transforming the former Fat Freddy’s. While it looks and feels like an entirely new venue, the name signals a return to its roots as an authentic local-centric watering hole that existed on the site before the highrises were developed. To deliver the elevated pub experience Moreton Hospitality envisioned for the venue, an extensive renovation was completed to extend the alfresco dining area that now runs the entire length of the Surf Parade street front, providing the perfect perch for sipping and snacking. The venue has also introduced a second bar area to service the alfresco diners as well as wall-to-wall screens dedicated to sports.

In terms of the menu, it’s elevated pub fare. Classic beer-drinking food such as buckets of tiger prawns, fried-chicken wings, parmis and burgers are flanked by slightly more elevated eats, including the likes of kingfish sashimi, freshly shucked oysters, bulbs of burrata and salmon poke bowls. There is a scattering of hand-stretched pizzas ranging from kid-friendly ham and pineapple to the spicy ‘njuda, which features prawns, mozzarella, tomato, basil and a drizzle of hot honey, but it’s the steaks that are the venue’s true specialty with a rump and a rib eye to choose from.

“We’re excited to bring back ‘The Beach Hotel Broadbeach’ and restoring the hotel to its original name,” said Lance Burrows, chief operating officer at
Moreton Hospitality. “Our goal is to reconnect with the local community and offer the quintessential pub experience – great food, drinks, live
entertainment, and that unmistakable beachside vibe.”

Replacing Miss Moneypenny’s will be Cora, which is set to open on Thursday December 5. The culinary offering, which will continue to be led by AGFG award-winning executive chef Tapos Singha, is set to weave modern Australian cuisine with flavours of the Mediterranean to deliver a coastal dining experience. The venue, we’re told, will keep the same level of sophistication, without the premium price tag and also dial up the fun with funk and disco elements.

“We listened to our customers and the new direction reflects this, with a dynamic coastal offering to welcome locals and visitors alike. The new venue is community-centric, welcoming families with children for the first time,” Lance said.

“I’m excited to steer the menu in a different direction and to bring a new dining experience to the coast,” Tapos added. “This new elevated pub offering is yet to be seen here at Broadbeach and Cora brings a contemporary dining experience that is designed to not only delight the palate but also nourish the body,” he said.

The Beach Hotel Broadbeach is now open, head to The Directory for opening times. Cora is set to open on December 5.
