The co-owners of modern-Asian dining spot Lucky Bao, which opened in Mermaid Beach in 2018, have unveiled their latest venture – a daytime eatery named Bobby Bang’s. Taking residence inside The Oxley in Nobby Beach, Bobby Bang’s puts an Asian spin on cafe classics, serving everything from breakfast ramen to Japanese-curry-topped scrambled eggs.

While long-running restaurant Lucky Bao continues to delight its strong local following at lunch and dinner with dishes like lamb-rib bao buns, taro ‘crack fries’ and punchy smacked cucumber, co-owners Daud Kendall and Emmi Munday have now set out to bring their style of fresh, fun and modern Asian cuisine to the Gold Coast cafe scene with Bobby Bang’s.

Chef Daud has constructed a unique menu of all-day breakfast dishes, which kicks off at 7:30 am daily, alongside a series of shokupan sandos, rice bowls, salads and noodle bowls for lunch. While diners can still enjoy traditional breakfast classics like eggs on sourdough with an ample selection of sides, much of the Bobby Bang’s menu has a distinct Asian lean – like the breakfast ramen, which comes loaded with crispy bacon, tamago (ramen egg), takana and truffle manchego. The scrambled eggs are topped with Japanese curry, pickled radish and nori, and the Bobby’s Benny is served with Korean fried chicken and drizzled with torched miso mayonnaise.

Other day-starters include matcha smoothie bowls topped with granola, an XO omelette with spanner crab, and a crumbed-mortadella muffin with fried egg and fermented green chilli.

For lunch, the Bobby Bang’s kitchen serves up a tasty selection of bowls like Malaysian-style beef-short-rib rendang over rice with cucumber-peanut relish, punchy tan tan noodles with spicy pork, egg yolk and nori, and XO noodles with bay lobster and plenty of chilli.

Sando fans can tuck into combinations like slow-cooked pork katsu with kewpie and bulldog sauce, and panko-crumbed prawns with baby cos and sriracha mayo, sandwiched by soft shokupan bread.

While Bobby Bang’s doesn’t serve coffee (you can grab your brew from its neighbour, Buoy), there’s a vibrant menu of alternatives on offer, including ceremonial matcha and cacao by local wellness brand Nya Rituals. Matcha fans are spoilt for choice with a raft of green-hued creations, from coconut water-based ‘matcha clouds’, strawberry iced matcha with house-made jam, and sparkling matcha fizzed with yuzu-ginger soda. The menu of sips also includes miso-caramel cacao hot chocolates and hojicha lattes, alongside housemade sodas and Mayde teas. The team also pours a tight list of cocktails including umeshu negronis and whisky highballs, as well as organic and bio-dynamic wines, and tap beers.

Bobby Bang’s officially opens on Wednesday December 18 at The Oxley at Nobby Beach, joining the likes of Buoy and Sunkist inside The Atrium area.
