Sonder arrives in Broadbeach with burger toasties, fresh bagels and quality brews

A fresh new face has arrived in Broadbeach that’s aiming to bring a little piece of Melbourne’s cafe culture to the Gold Coast. While only open for a matter of weeks, Sonder, which is nestled along the tree-lined Phillip Avenue, is already abuzz as locals with a keen eye for great toasties and quality coffee descend on the sleek new cafe.

After moving to the Gold Coast from Melbourne two years ago, Marc Nanfro – who also co-owns Buddy Espresso in Melbourne’s northern suburbs – set his sights on finding the perfect site to bring a hint of his hometown to the Gold Coast. Marc and business partner Michael Romeo, both conveniently former carpenters, got to work on a floor-to-ceiling build to bring Sonder to life after securing a brand-new space below the luxe Signature Broadbeach tower on Phillip Avenue, just a stone’s throw from the beach. The sleek mid-century-modern beauty isn’t designed to be packed to the rafters with seating, with its plush leather lounge and timber wall of vinyl (which Marc ‘borrowed’ from his mum’s collection) inviting cafegoers to sit, sip, snack and stay a while.

The all-day menu at Sonder is headlined by simple-yet-tasty toasties and fresh bagels, alongside a handful of breakfast classics. The Buddy’s Burger Toastie (a riff on Buddy Espresso’s most popular item) is already a firm favourite, a gooey number sandwiching a smashed burger patty, pickles, tasty cheese and special sauce. There’s also fresh bagels with fillings like haloumi, fried eggplant, sundried tomato, rocket and Kewpie, and familiar go-tos like eggs on sourdough, chilli scrambled eggs, and poached-pear and cinnamon oats (served warm or cold) with a pistachio crumble. For something a little more hearty, wrap your hungry hands around the panko-crumbed-chicken burger with pickles, tasty cheese, lettuce and spicy mayo.

There are brews by Toby’s Estate on pour, alongside cold-pressed juices, teas and matcha, and dairy-free smoothies. The list of sips are set to expand with the duo working to secure a liquor licence that will allow trade to flow into low-key afternoons filled with wine and cheese. Stay tuned.

Sonder is now open. For openings hours and contact details, head to The Directory.
