Labrador’s Chirn Park has scored a mouth-watering new addition in the form of Taiwan Tummy, delivering a fresh take on Taiwanese street food. The space – once home to the long-standing Tonic on Chirn – has undergone an incredible transformation with Jasper Tsai, a former engineer, and Cynthia Leung, a graphic designer, at the helm. Together, they bring a deep-seated love for hospitality and Taiwanese cooking to the northern end. Here’s everything you need to know …

While the Gold Coast is spoilt for choice when it comes to excellent Cantonese and Asian-fusion restaurants, when it comes to Taiwanese joints, the selections are far fewer. Taiwan Tummy is here to change that. The eatery is a loving nod to the Tsai family’s roots. Jasper’s grandmother started a street-food cart in Taiwan back in 1958, which blossomed into a bustling restaurant that’s still in the family today. Growing up helping in the kitchen, hospitality and a love for good food were deeply ingrained in Jasper from a young age.

When Jasper and Cynthia made the move to Australia three years ago, they did so with the dream of sharing the rich flavours of Taiwan with the Gold Coast. When they told Jasper’s grandma about their plans to open a restaurant, she gifted them the secret family recipes. These treasured recipes have been passed down through generations, and after a year of testing and cooking for friends and family, including Moonsun from the ever-popular nearby 5B2F Bakehouse, the duo felt ready to bring their vision to life.

Taiwan Tummy officially opened its doors two weeks ago and already, it’s become a hit with the locals. The venue, despite being geared towards takeaway, is so pretty you’ll want to pull up a seat and dine in. With tan leather seating, warm timber accents and a splash of marble, it’s simple, striking and sleek – just like the food.

Speaking of, at Taiwan Tummy the menu is refreshingly straightforward. The focus is on Taiwanese-inspired bento boxes, and you won’t find an overwhelming list of choices. Rather, there’s five bento options to choose from, including four meat-based and one vegetarian. The Taiwanese shredded chicken and rice is ideal for those seeking a healthy bite, while the deep-fried chicken maryland and the fried pork-loin chop are equal parts delicious and devilish. Round out your spread with a serve of the popcorn chicken, fried fish cake or the scallion pancake with egg.

When it comes to the drinks, the offering is equally as curated with homemade apple tea, iced-black tea, iced honey grass jelly and the ever-popular bubble tea, which is handmade to order.

Jasper and Cynthia’s journey to opening Taiwan Tummy has been one of dedication, passion and a lot of love for good food. More than just a meal, this venue is sharing a part of their heritage, their family and their love for Taiwanese cuisine.
