The Deli by Pepe and Burleigh Gelato Co. are both highly regarded in their respective culinary corners, so when they partnered up for a new Italian noshery in a pocket of Burleigh Heads, we knew it would be amazing. And we were not wrong. With things ticking along nicely, the crew began scoping other spots and stumbled upon the perfect pad at Habitat Byron Bay. After a speedy fit-out, the doors to Piada Co Byron Bay are open! Here’s what you can expect …

With the Gold Coast market firmly converted to Piada Co’s own interpretation of Italian street food, the team – consisting of Andrea and Alexa Fabrizio of The Deli by Pepe, and Bree Edwards and Simon Bird of Burleigh Gelato Co. – cast the net a little wider for their eagerly anticipated second location. Having stumbled upon Habitat in Byron Bay’s Arts and Industrial area, they immediately fell in love with the communal nature of the precinct. The space, which was formerly occupied by Sefa Kitchen and Commune Canteen, has been amalgamated to one long tenancy that is shared by Piada Co as well as Sparrow Coffee Co.

The brand’s signature Amalfi-inspired maroon and orange-striped upholstery from Burleigh have made an appearance, with an expanded seating area consisting of 55 inside as well as 60–70 outside.

In terms of the menu, expect the entire range of Piada Co’s famous street food, including its hallmark piadinas, which is an Italian-style flatbread filled with an array of mouth-watering ingredients such as salami, mortadella and prosciutto. The bread itself is a highlight – made fresh in-house daily using imported Italian zero flour, it’s lighter, less processed and easier to digest.

Alongside the piadinas, you’ll find a selection of street-food favourites, including suppli (think giant arancini balls filled with gooey cheese), burrata bowls featuring Byron Bay’s award-winning burrata with fresh tomato and basil, and crispy calamari fritti.

Exclusive to Byron Bay, the team has expanded the selections to include a dedicated dinner menu, featuring pizza and pasta. Led by Andrea Fabrizio, who has been spinning dough for years at The Deli by Pepe in Palm Beach, the pizza is defined as ‘Piada Co style’, which is a mix of type 0 and type 1 flour for the perfect balance – light, crispy and easy on the gut. “We use a special fermentation process that gives it flavour, consistency and helps the dough rise perfectly. We then let it rest for 48-72 hours. The result is something really special,” Bree says of Piada Co’s specialised dough.

“We wanted to really activate the space and do it justice, so increasing our offering including a specific dinner menu with pizza and pasta just made sense,” she said.

Rounding out the offering is a full bar with delicious cocktails, a curated wine list and beers on tap. Oh, and let’s not forget Piada Co’s famous frappes, which have become the stuff of legends here on the Gold Coast.
