Upon arriving at Basq House, hidden in a laneway in the centre of Byron Bay’s bustling village precinct, it quickly becomes clear why this spot is a sought-after retreat. Inspired by the grandeur of Moroccan riads, this 32-room boutique hotel blends eclectic charm and cultural influences with modern luxury, making it a stylish sanctuary for those seeking both tranquillity and adventure.
Created by Melbourne-based owners Matt Walsh and Shane Wilkinson, alongside StudioFAB’s Matt Dalby and local designer Léo Terrando, Basq House radiates a relaxed vibe with contemporary elegance. Rooms are stylishly minimalist, yet include all the creature comforts such as curated minibars and views of the sleek magnesium pool. All worries melt away and you’ll forget you’re in the centre of Byron Bay.
With a focus on Byron Bay’s thriving community culture and passion for health and wellness, Basq House’s vibrant communal areas encourage socialising and fun, while the abundance of natural textures and furnishings create a homely warmth allowing guests to feel immersed in their surroundings. The reception area doubles as a speakeasy-style bar, featuring Byron Bay artist Damian Bisogni’s artwork and Tigmi Trading’s woven lights. Sip on a margarita or negroni while relaxing among local ceramics and art. Get cosy in the library, adorned with Brazilian rainforest art, South African masks, luxe leather sofas and a roaring fireplace. Here, you’ll find a curated collection of books perfect for quiet moments or creative inspiration. But if you’re anything like us, you’ll first want to lounge around the magnesium pool in the sun-drenched cabanas and soak up the magic of this hidden haven.
When you’re ready to venture out, use the hotel’s Lekker push bikes, beach gear or guest share vehicles that are on hand and enjoy easy access to Byron Bay’s beaches and dining hotspots. Not sure where to eat? We at The Weekend Edition have rounded up the best of Byron Bay restaurants all on your doorstep.
