A view to 2032 – get a peek at the planned developments for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics

After much ado, the Queensland Government has released its plan for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics titled Delivering 2032 and Beyond. The outcome of a 100-day review, stakeholder consultation and community input, the 2032 Delivery Plan promises shiny new venues and upgraded sports facilities as well as transport projects across the state. Here are the highlights …

The heart of the 2032 games will be Victoria Park, where the government has committed to building a new 63,000-seat stadium as part of the central Games precinct spanning Spring Hill, Bowen Hills and Victoria Park. The plan also promises a new National Aquatic Centre on the site of the Centenary Pool in Spring Hill, as well as a major upgrade of the Queensland Tennis Centre – including a new 3000-seat show court arena and 12 new match courts.

Brisbane’s RNA Showgrounds will be upgraded with a 20,000 seat outdoor arena, which the Government says will help improve future Ekkas. Also constructed in Bowen Hills will be the main athlete’s village, which under the plan will be converted to permanent housing after the Games.

The fate of The Gabba has been decided under the 2023 Delivery Plan. It will host the cricket during the games and be demolished afterwards, making way for what the plan says will be a “vibrant new entertainment and housing precinct”.

The Gold Coast, which will be hosting the hockey, will score a new arena and upgrades to its hockey centre, as well as an additional athletes village at Royal Pines.

In addition to sporting venues, the plan promises an improved transport network for Southeast Queensland including new rail lines and stations, northern and eastern Brisbane bus corridors, upgrades to the Pacific Motorway and the Bruce Highway, and faster rail from Brisbane to the Gold Coast.

The plans have not been delivered without controversy, with the announcement – which includes a number of broken election promises – receiving a mixed opinion from the public. Concerns have also been raised regarding the impact the development will have on Victoria Park, with its green space a site of significance to First Nations communities.
