Brisbane is gearing up for another stellar summer and there’s no better way to soak up the blue skies and sunshine than with a day outside. If you’re craving a cycle along Brisbane’s famous brown snake to ring in the season, we’ve rounded up all the best new additions and tried-and-true staples along the Riverwalk to add a foodie flair to your adventure. Grab that always-flattering helmet because with the ease of an e-bike, you can ride to these must-stop spots on the Riverwalk in style.
Bar Miette, Brisbane City: The new venture from renowned restaurateur Andrew McConnell, Bar Miette has brought a touch of the riviera to the river. The bar’s outdoor terrace is studded with subtropical greens, sun-kissed umbrellas and a perfectly framed view of the river and Story Bridge. Beyond its charming selection of aperitifs, Bar Miette also serves up a mean breakfast menu, making it the perfect reward after a morning ride.
Gigi’s, Brisbane City: Howard Smith Wharves might be home to some of Brisbane’s best-known dining destinations – but don’t forget Gigi’s, the pint-sized cafe hidden behind the Rivershed. Gigi’s is home to an olive tree-filled alfresco garden with plenty of communal tables where you can soak up some sun and tuck into the all-day breakfast menu. The kitchen leans Mediterranean, serving up freshly baked spanakopita, a selection of stacked breakfast sandwiches and delicious coffee.
The Officer’s Mess, New Farm: This heritage-listed mess hall perched on the banks of the Brisbane River was recently revamped and reborn as The Officers Mess. Located right on the river, near Oxlade Drive, The Officer’s Mess is home to a bakery, cafe and bar. Grab a spot under the jacaranda tree and take in the river views as you chow down on some of the drool-worthy creations from the pastry cabinet.
DUMBO, Hamilton: Few things can compete with the endorphin rush of a ride along the picturesque Hamilton leg of the Riverwalk – but a juicy burger might just do it. Portside Wharf recently opened DUMBO, a New York-style burger spot from The Red Hook team. Post-ride, DUMBO will beckon you inside with its mouth-watering menu of comfort food favourites from Korean hot honey and buttermilk ranch to the venue’s namesake burger (think smash patties, melty American cheese, special sauce and tangy pickles).
Cicada Blu, Brisbane City: There’s no better way to finish a leisurely trip along the river than with a sunset drink – and now you can enjoy just that 100 metres in the sky. When The Star Brisbane opened its doors earlier this year, it added a new landmark with its multiple restaurants and expansive new viewing deck. At SkyDeck, you can take in the spectacular views of Brisbane River while grabbing a drink at the newly opened bar Cicada Blu.
