There’s a lot happening in Brisbane these days, almost too much to keep up with. The Dish is a rapid-fire rundown of Brisbane food news – quick taster-sized tidbits to keep you in the know and, perhaps, tickle your taste buds.
Six before Six at The Nixon Room
James Street’s ultra-chic hideaway The Nixon Room has long been a go-to spot for a pre-dinner snack or cocktail. Now there are extra reasons to come through early, as the bar has just launched a new menu and a killer promo to match. Guests dining at The Nixon Room before 6:00 pm are being given the chance to enjoy their food for free – as long as they roll a six one of the bar’s bright-red six-sided dice. That’s it – there’s no fine print and no catch. That means you can saunter in and enjoy serves of The Nixon Room’s potato gems with cultured cream and caviar, squid ink and truffle salami, fried-duck sanga with black-garlic mustard and truffle mayo, and baked brie with river mint honey for free as long as you roll a six. If you’re feeling lucky, pop into The Nixon Room next time you are on James Street and ask the team for details.
Dinner with Tony Tan at Supernormal
Legendary food writer and chef Tony Tan is making his way to Brisbane to celebrate the launch of his latest cookbook, Tony Tan’s Asian Cooking Class. As part of his whirlwind tour, the culinary maestro will be teaming up with Supernormal’s executive chef Jason Barratt and his team for a one-night-only pop-up event on Thursday November 21.
The evening will see Tony and the Supernormal crew present a four-course menu spotlighting recipes plucked from Tony’s new cookbook, including grilled scallops with sweetcorn sauce and curry leaf, Rajasthani watermelon curry, and Penang Nyonya curry fish with spiced tamarind sauce. Throughout the evening, Tony will also join diners tableside to share stories and answer questions about his new book.
Dinner kicks off at 6:00 pm, with tickets available now for $120 per person. Head to Seven Rooms to secure a spot.
Ten years of The Triffid
Newstead live-music venue The Triffid is celebrating ten years of tunes with a big week of events, including its iconic Album of the Year party, which is set for Wednesday November 13. This year, local stand-outs Girl & Girl, Radium Dolls, Clea, Asha Jefferies and The Dreggs will vie for the honour of The Triffid’s Album of the Year title.
Also on the night, Patience Hodgson of The Grates will team up with a bunch of other talented Brisbane musicians from the likes of Ball Park Music, The Creases, Full Flower Moon Band and Simi Lacroix to celebrate The Grates’ own legendary career.
To further commemorate the occasion, The Triffid has teamed up with Range Brewing on a collaborative beer, the Fan Favourite lager. This thirst-quenching drop boasts soft notes of bready hops and a light refreshing bitterness, with vivid artwork by Lee McConnell on the can. The Fan Favourite lager will only be available from Wednesday November 13 onwards at The Triffid while stocks last.
Commune of Buttons and Basket Range at Bar Hugo
This one is for the oenophiles. West End wine bar Bar Hugo will be hosting a glass takeover event on Tuesday November 19, inviting the crew from South Australian winemakers Commune of Buttons and Basket Range to pour a range of vino and vermouth from 5:00–8:00 pm.
Commune of Buttons winemaker Jasper Button will be on site, pouring wines and answering any questions, while the Bar Hugo kitchen will be dispensing complimentary snacks. The evening is a walk-in-friendly event, so if you’re in the area, be sure to pop in for a sip or two.
